Important action for UAS/GLAM managed PC users

With lots of new features designed to enhance productivity, creativity and collaboration, Windows 11 and Office 2021 are already making an impact for university staff.

Act now

All managed PC (desktop and laptop) users have been contacted by email with instructions for upgrading their devices to the new software so they can take advantage of the additional functionality.

You should complete the upgrade as soon as possible – all managed PCs need to be upgraded before July 2025.

Make sure you have plenty of time available, the upgrade takes around three hours to complete.

During the upgrade:

  • Make sure mains power is plugged in (laptops)
  • Do not close lid (laptops)
  • Do not force power off including holding the power switch or pulling the plug (desktop and laptop)

What happens if you don’t complete the upgrade

From July, all remaining devices will be upgraded automatically. This is likely to be during working hours at a time which may not be convenient for you such as during a meeting, or while you are in the middle of writing a masterpiece. It’s best to do the upgrade yourself when you have set time aside to do it.

*Don't ignore pop ups asking you to upgrade the BIOS on your device; this is a pre-requisite for upgrading to Windows 11 and requires a couple of restarts.

Why you need to complete the Windows 11 upgrade

Security updates for older versions of Windows and Office stop later this year making them unsuitable for university use. For security purposes all devices should always be kept up to date.

Departments using PCs that are not managed by IT Services also need to ensure they have upgraded. See the IT Services website for Information about Windows 11 and Office 2021 and advice about the upgrade process.
