Modernising the University's telephony service

With BT’s nationwide switch-off of analogue phone lines by the end of 2026, the University is also taking the opportunity to modernise its telephony services. During the 2025/26 academic year, it will transition all its telephony to a cloud-based solution: Microsoft Teams Phone.

What is Teams Phone?

"Teams Phone enables you to make and receive calls directly through the Microsoft Teams app on your desktop or laptop as well as via mobile device(s) or Teams compatible desk phones. It offers all the standard telephony features - such as call transfer and voicemail - alongside enhanced accessibility options including live call captions.

When will I be able to use Teams Phone?

More than 3,500 staff members across the University are already using Teams Phone. A pilot with a small number of colleges and departments is currently underway with the main transition being coordinated in three termly tranches, details of which are to be confirmed.  The process will be managed locally, with individual colleges and departments developing their own policies regarding provision and use of desk phones and other equipment. Please look out for further communications from your department or college in the coming year.
